Day 12 (4/2/11)

Today we woke up and went down to the train station where we would be leaving from for the beach! It was quite an adventure just getting on the train, one that I could have done without. When we got there we had a great time dealing with the Italian ticket machine, but we eventually figured it out. However as we were waiting for our train, time passed and no train ever showed up, so we checked the schedule and found out that we could take the bus! When we talked to the bus driver, he said he had to leave but the next one would take us. So we played some eye-tag until the next bus showed, where we were promptly told that he could not take us because we had the wrong ticket and that we had to take the train…great. So we checked the schedule again and decided to wait another half hour for the next (hopefully) train. I was convinced that once it got here the conductor would tell us we had the wrong ticket and that we had to take the bus! However this was untrue, and before we knew it we were zooming through the countryside on the way to the Adriatic Coast.
Once we got there, we looked silly as one of us approached an Italian woman to ask where it was in very broken Italian with some loud English and copious hand signals, to which she replied with directions in perfect English…whoops. Nonetheless, after a short walk we were staring at the bluest water I have ever seen on a beach. We changed and blocked up and relaxed for a while. The water was extremely cold, so we ended up staying around the edge of the water (which felt amazing on the feet once you had been in it for a while!) and skipped stones and talked/joked/yelled. After a while we decided to head out to find some lunch.
This turned out to be a grand fail-fest for Joe, Josh and I. We ended up stopping at a café, where they a bigger wine list than food menu, and ended up getting tiny little disappointing sandwiches and water. Dejected, I crossed the street to the gelato shop where it was all made better with a heaping cone-ful (it is great because they just expect you to ask for more flavors on it, when I was content with one!). I got pistachio (clearly my favorite), a raspberry cheesecake-type thing, and some other one that I tried on a whim. As was expected, it was fantastic and I forgot all about the café. We walked back to the beach and chilled there until I finished my ice cream and left to go read in the park under a tree-the best moment of the day.
After some reading I went back to the beach and played in the sand while everyone trickled back in from lunch. It was then that I saw the coolest thing in the whole world: they have parasailing here, but instead of being connected to a boat, the chair has a giant fan attached to the back of it so you can just fly around over the water!!!! Next a few of us walked up along the coast to a sandbar out in the water where I saw the most amazing thing. Off in the distance was a set of amazingly beautiful mountains covered in snow. It was kind of a weird experience, standing on a hot beach looking at snowy mountains, but it was pretty great.
Finally, after some more goofing around we packed up and trekked back to the station. It was sad to leave the area because of how nice it was, but it was a great day so I was pretty pooped anyway. After a thankfully uneventful train ride home, I ate a little bit of dinner and relaxed for a while before heading to bed!
